Sailing 101

Never stepped foot on a sail boat? Or maybe you’ve sailed, but just sort of winged it? Regardless of your experience, our Basic Sailing 100 courses can get you sailing around New York City in just one weekend!


Learn the basics of sailing as well as the technical explanations and science behind it all! We’ll cover all the important knots, techniques, and nautical terminology to get you seaworthy — learning first in the classroom and then putting it to practice on the water.

We have three levels of Sailing 100 courses, offered every summer in NYC:

SAILING 101: Basic Keelboat

This course follows the US Sailing Basic Keelboat curriculum and covers the following topics:
-rigging and sails
-apparent and true wind
-points of sail
-sail trim
-tacking and jibing
-wind pressure and lift
-boat handling
-compass steering
-man overboard drills
-reefing and heavy weather techniques
-right of way and seamanship

No previous sailing experience required.


Make it official!

Earn your US Basic Keelboat certification, issued by the US Sailing Association — the governing body of sailing in the United States. The certification exam is optional and is issued on the final day of your course. Only US Sailing associated schools and the certified instructors can award these certificates.
